    House Fires (A.M. Only) This Class Is Full
    Lead Instructor: Bob Pressler
    Class Description: The every day fire ground operation for the American fire service is the private house fire. Hundreds of times a day, Fire Departments respond to fires in houses. Not all these operations conclude successfully. This 4-hour class will address all aspects of fighting fires in private dwellings, starting with building construction and continuing with a proper size-up including “reading Smoke" and fire conditions. This class will cover the requirements of the first arriving companies to ensure a safe and efficient operation. The emphasis will be on the efficient stretching of the first hand line and aggressive, but safe searches for trapped occupants.
    Requirements: Boots, gloves and head protection. (No SCBA)
    Class Limit: 35+ participants

    Suburban Firefighting (P.M. Only) This Class Is Full
    Lead Instructor: Bob Pressler
    Class Description: A look at the common fires that firefighters are faced with everyday across the US. This 4 hour class will cover fires in private dwellings, stores, and garden apartments, but based on a FD response of 2 Engines and 1 Ladder Company with limited staffing. Initial operations will be covered with the intent to maximize the impact that a limited response will have on the scene of a working fire in a safe and efficient manner.
    Requirements: Boots, gloves and head protection. (No SCBA)
    Class Limit: 35+ participants

    September 20th and 21st, 2008
    (4-Hour Classes)


    Search / Thermal Imager (A.M. Only)
    Lead Instructors: Firefighters Niemann, Hittle, Johnson
    Class Description: Attendees will employ a variety of techniques to conduct a primary search in challenging environments. Students will rotate through stations involving basic and advanced thermal imaging skills, packaging, residential, and multiple/large area search techniques. At the conclusion of training students will participate in a real time scenario.
    Requirements: Complete PPE & SCBA
    Class Limit: 24 participants

    Vent Enter Search / Ground Ladders (P.M. Only)
    Lead Instructors: Firefighters Niemann, Hittle, Johnson
    Class Description: Students will learn street-smart skills that often aren’t covered in textbooks or initial training but that are necessary to operate safely with portable ladders and V.E.S. while on the fireground. Rotating through three interactive stations students will perform new and improved tactics and techniques in ladder raises, placement, marking, Vent Enter Search, and victim/firefighter ladder removal.
    Requirements: Complete PPE & SCBA
    Class Limit: 24 participants

    Truck Company Operations
    Lead Instructor: Firefighter David Becker, Captain Bob Wolfe, Firefighter Scott Kleinschmidt
    Class Description: This 8-hour course will provide you with fundamental knowledge and skills of Truck Company Operations in ventilation, forcible-entry, search and rescue, ladder, and tool familiarization.
    Requirements: Complete Personal Protective Equipment (SCBA w/ extra bottle)
    Class Limit: 30 participants

    Engine Company Operations
    Lead Instructor: Captain Sid Newby
    Class Description: This 8--hour course will cover Fireground engine company operations, including riding positions and assignments, water supply, stretching and operating the first line, the backup line, and when to use the 2-1/2 inch line. Hands on skill stations are conducted, under realistic conditions, to build solid engine company skills. The fire suppression segment is conducted under live fire conditions, performing as members of an engine company.
    Requirements: Complete Personal Protective Equipment (SCBA w/ extra bottle)
    Class Limit: 16 participants

    Live Fire- NFPA 1403
    Lead Instructor: Captain Jones, Lieutenant Ross, Lieutenant Pearman, Firefighter Chad Cox
    Class Description: This 8--hour class will be held at the WFD Training Academy. The instruction will cover the NFPA standards required in conducting a live fire training exercise. The class will then participate in several live fire events.
    Requirements: Complete Personal Protective Equipment (SCBA w/ extra bottle)
    Class Limit: 20 participants

    Forcible Entry
    Lead Instructor: Captain Carlos Rodriguez
    Class Description: In this 8-hour class firefighters will learn tricks of the trade for Forcible Entry. Beginning with size up, to tool selection, Firefighters will learn conventional entry, thru the lock techniques, high security devices, and roll up doors no matter what department size is responding. From the Big City to the smaller towns, the bottom line is “we have to get in".
    Requirements: Complete Personal Protective Equipment (No SCBA)
    Class Limit: 20 participants

    Safety and Survival
    Lead Instructor: Firefighter Wade Holle
    Class Description: Every year firefighters lose their lives at the scene of a fire that has gone bad. Some of the causes are due to a roof collapse, floor collapse, flash over, or just getting lost in an IDLH. This course was developed by a number of fire department from across the country. Fire fighters put their lives at risk every time they leave the firehouse. This 8-hour course will give the student a number of self-rescue options that could save their lives if the unforeseen emergency should arise.
    Requirements: Complete PPE w/SCBA
    Class Limits: 20 participants

    Vehicle Extrication
    Lead Instructor: Lieutenant Randy Scott, Jeff Holt
    Class Description: This is an 8-hour Class that will cover 7 Modules that include Vehicle Safety, Vehicle Design, Vehicle Restraints, Alternative fuels, Vehicle Extrication, Vehicle Fires and Highway Safety. This class will examine: Passenger protection systems and how they have become extreme in some vehicles. Hybrid vehicle and alternative fuels are becoming more of a threat. Hazard awareness of all vehicles and extrication safety. from simple to complex extrication, this is an opportunity for all experience levels to be exposed to excellent information.
    EMT recertification hours.
    Requirements: Complete Personal Protective Equipment (No SCBA)
    Class Limits: 20 participants

    Arson Investigation
    Lead Instructor: Captain Brad Crisp
    Class Description: This 8-hour class will place emphasis on how first responders can evaluate and handle a scene until a fire investigator arrives. Also, first responders will be presented with basic fire investigation information to help sharpen their skills in determining origin and cause in minor fire scenes. The second part of the class deals with fire scene evaluation, including work with the Accelerant Detection K-9. This portion of the class will address the training methodology, fire scene utilization, and inherent limitations of the K-9.
    Requirements: Safety equipment needed for the scene investigation will include boots, gloves and head protection. (No SCBA)
    Class Limit: 35+ participants



    Instructor Bios

    Lieutenant Robert Pressler (FDNY retired)
    Bob Pressler is a 30+ year veteran of the fire service and is retired from the F.D.N.Y., where he attained the rank of Lieutenant. Previous to serving with F.D.N.Y., he had been a member of two combination departments, one on the career side and one on the volunteer side, and has also been a member of several volunteer departments, currently serving as 2nd Assistant Chief in the Montgomery VFD in Orange County, New York. Pressler holds an Associates Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from Oklahoma State University. He was the Hands On Coordinator for the Fire Department Instructors Conference for its first seven years in Indianapolis, Indiana, and three years in Sacramento, California. He is a past member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of both Fire Chief and Fire Engineering magazines. He has spoken at the FDIC and Firehouse Expo, Firehouse World, and Firehouse, Las Vegas. Pressler has written numerous articles for several trade magazines and lectures around the country on a wide variety of fire service issues.

    Firefighter David Becker
    David Becker has 14-year veteran of the fire service, seven of which have been with the Wichita Fire Dept. He is currently stationed at Heavy Rescue 4 and has been on the Rescue Team for the past 5 years.

    Captain Brad Crisp CFI, CFEI
    Fire/Arson Investigator

    Captain Crisp is a 17-year veteran of the Wichita Fire Department. Captain Crisp has spent the last 11 years in fire prevention, as an inspector, public educator, and fire investigator. Captain Crisp was certified as an investigator in 1998 and has investigated over 600 fires. Captain Crisp has a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, and over 1200 hours of training in fire investigation. He is an adjunct instructor for the Butler Community College Fire Science Program, and a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Accelerant Detection Canine handler. He is also certified through the International Association of Arson Investigators, and the National Association of Fire Investigators as a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator.

    Firefighter Wade Holle
    Firefighter Wade Holle is a 22 year veteran of the fire service, serving the last 9 years with the Wichita Fire Department. He is assigned to one of the busiest fire houses in the city responding to hundreds of fires during his career. 2004, Firefighter Holle was selected as “firefighter of the year" and is currently an acting lieutenant. Firefighter Holle assisted with getting the live burn program off the ground and is very active in all types of fireground training. Firefighter Holle got his start teaching this course after attending the class at FDIC. He has taught recruit classes, department drills, and was an instructor for the Winter Fire School held in Wichita in 2005.

    Firefighter Scott Kleinschmidt
    Firefighter Kleinschmidt is a 12-year veteran with the Wichita Fire Dept. assigned to the city’s Heavy Rescue Station. He is a member of the city/county Technical Rescue Team as well as a regional and national instructor in Fire Services and Technical Rescue. Scott is an WFD adjunct instructor to the training division assisting in recruit training and past Wichita HoT instructor.

    Captain Sid Newby
    Captain Sid Newby is a 27 year veteran of the Wichita Fire Department. He has been an engine company captain for 13 years. He is currently assigned to firehouse #2, the busiest fire companies in the city. He will be joined by Lt. Matt Bowen, FF Lance Diffenbaugh and several experienced members of the WFD.


    Captain Carlos Rodriguez
    Captain Rodriguez is a 18-year veteran with the Wichita Fire Department. He will be joining the crews from Squad 12 and Engine 12 that serve the south part of the city.

    Lieutenant Kelly Ross
    Kelly Ross is a 12 year veteran of the Wichita Fire Department, the last two as a Lieutenant. Lieutenant Ross is an accomplished professional in the fire service having spent a majority of his career at some of the busiest stations in the state.

    Firefighter Chad Cox
    Chad Cox has been a veteran of the Wichita Fire Department for nearly 7 years. Currently he is assigned to firehouse 10 which is the departments Hazmat Response Team. He is active in training and recently received extensive training in live fire training evolutions at the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.
    Lieutenant Randy Scott
    Randy Scott is a 15-year member of the Wichita Fire Department. Randy has been assigned to a jaws unit for 13 of his 15 years with Wichita. Randy spent the first 7 years at Station One on Rescue One. Rescue One was one of four trucks in Wichita that was disciplined in extrication. As a Lieutenant, Randy has spent the last 3 years at Station 19. This is a station that is surrounded with highways that has consistently provided opportunities for difficult extrications in the City of Wichita and as mutual aid with Sedgwick County. Randy has been an EMT since 1989. He is a Vehicle Extrication Trainer for the City of Wichita Battalion 2 on A-shift. Certified to Fire Officer One. Randy can bring exciting and new information to share with all experience levels of extrication. Randy is looking forward to sharing and gaining street level knowledge with all who participate in the class.

    Jeff Holt
    was a full-time firefighter in Harrison Arkansas for 15 years and have been regional sales manager for Amkus for 2 ˝ years. I also work closely with NASCAR because of the Amkus/NASCAR relationship and work extrication trucks at Talladega and Daytona. I look forward to seeing you in September.
    Captain Bob Wolfe
    Captain Bob Wolfe is a 26 year veteran of the Wichita Fire Department, the last 14 as a Captain. Bob is currently assigned to Station #9 and serves as the officer of Aerial Platform 9. Bob has been a member of the Rescue Team since its inception in the mid 1980’s. He is a former instructor for Butler County Community College and currently teaches Ladder, Ventilation and VES classes to Fire Departments thorough the State. Bob is also an adjunct instructor to the training division assisting in recruit training.

    Firefighters Niemann, Hittle, Johnson
    This team of instructors has spent a majority of their careers at some of the busiest firehouses in the state. Currently they are assigned to Firehouse 10 as members of the Wichita Fire Department HazMat Team. Together they bring a wide array of knowledge, collection of fire service accreditations, as well as local and state commendations for search and rescue operations. Collectively, these instructors have educated firefighters throughout the state, at the collegiate level, and authored articles regarding fire practices.
