Keynote Speech
Tony Tricarico
It is the mission of the Wichita HoT Regional Fire School is to deliver high quality, advanced, training to the Kansas Fire Service. To accomplish this, all training delivered as part of the Wichita HoT shall be applicable to the street level firefighters and Company Officers. What better subject for a Key Note lecture to follow than that of the Mission statement? Captain Tony Tricarico (ret) will address the issues concerning our fire departments in the state of Kansas and other departments through out the country, at the level of firefighters and Company Officers. When you think of Company Officers you think of the men and women that are leading you into harms way. But what about the followers, the firefighters?
We will speak about being a good strong leader and commanding the troops that you will do battle with. We will also speak about the people that follow the leaders; the dedication, drive, ability and aptitude that gives each one of them the desire to call themselves firefighters. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “It is far better to dare mighty things and to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” As a firefighter, you know exactly what President Roosevelt means.
The way to win is to train. We do not do battle as often as we may desire, so the only way to be battle ready is to train. How far is too far? When training, safety is an absolute. When on the fire ground do you take risks? Will you take risks? Have you trained to the degree than you know the calculation of the risk you may be ready to take? Is it fool hardy or calculated?
This lecture will encompass many areas of the fire service and ask you hard, straight forward questions on your readiness, your abilities, your training.
Are you where you want to be? Are you ready for battle?
