“I’M LOST”, I’M TRAPPED”, I’M LOW ON AIR”. These are perhaps the most terrifying words that are communicated on the fire ground. In response to losing one of our own dedicated firefighters at a large area commercial structure fire, members of the Kansas City Fire Department developed a quick and effective method for locating and rescuing firefighters in large areas. You and your firefighters are three times more likely to die at commercial and industrial occupancy fires. With today’s RIT conscious fire service, a Large Area Search Team is a necessary tool. Come let us share what is becoming known as the most efficient system from instructors that have developed the L.A.S.T. for the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department, been utilizing it, and teaching it for the last 11 years to departments around the nation.

Size-up and Lock Out / Tag Out Procedures will be emphasized. The group will be allotted hand and power tools to disentangle the victim. Instructors will allow the team to assemble a plan of removal. The Instructors will offer additional methods of removal to the teams. Although presented as entrapments, not all evolutions will involve technical removals. The idea behind this program is to familiarize students with extrication techniques but, to also reinforce "thinking outside the box". Tools that will be used will include cord / cordless right angle grinders, sawzalls, drills and band saws. Homemade tools, sockets and other hand tools will be proven to be very effective in these extrications. At all times, safety for the patient and team members will be top priority. Every year firefighters lose their lives at the scene of a fire that has gone bad. Some of the causes are due to a roof collapse, floor collapse, flash over, or just getting lost in an IDLH. This 8-hour course will give the student a number of self-rescue options that could save their lives if the unforeseen emergency should arise.
